Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, Robert Walpole, was born#onthisday in 1676. Occupying the role for 20 years, he remains the longest-serving Prime Minister in British history. Known for his stabilising effect on politics, Walpole cemented the Whig hold on power in the early 18th century. He also accepted 10 Downing Street as the official home of the Prime Minister in 1732.
