British Biotechnology Suffers From Clash of Two Cultures -- Scientific Research and Finance
Britain ’s biotech industry was once hailed as a world-beater. Small teams of British scientists – working for their own small companies – were supposed to deliver a raft of new medicines that would sell around the globe. But it hasn’t turned out like that.
Many of those small firms have lost money, gone bust or been gobbled up by giant multinational drug companies. So what is the problem? Is this a matter of finance…..or a lack of scientific innovation? Stephen Beard reports.
